The exceptional divisor and the degenerate centres #
For any blowing-up π : M' → M with centre Y in the sense of IsBlowUp [BM88, Definition 4.1]:
- The exceptional divisor. In a blow-up chart of index
ithe exceptional divisorF = π⁻¹(Y)is the hyperplane{u_i = 0}(IsBlowUpChart.mem_preimage_iff), soFis a closed submanifold of codimension one (IsBlowUp.isClosedSubmanifold_preimage; the exceptional divisor of a smooth blow-up is smooth, [Kol07, Notation 19]). The pullback of the ideal sheaf ofYis the ideal sheaf ofF: its stalk at a point of a blow-up chart is generated by the germ ofu_i(sincez_i ∘ π = u_iandz_j ∘ π = u_i u_j;IsBlowUp.stalkIdeal_pullback_eq_span_coord), and this is the ideal ofFin every adapted chart ofF, because the kernel of the restriction of germs toFis generated by the adapted coordinate (IsClosedSubmanifold.ker_restrictStalk); henceIsBlowUp.isIdealSheafOf_pullback. - The degenerate centres. For a centre of codimension one, or an empty centre, the blowing-up
is a diffeomorphism (the trivial and the empty blow-up of [Kol07, Warning 20]): it is a
bijective local diffeomorphism (
IsLocalDiffeomorph.toDiffeomorphOfBijective). Forc = 1the single chart mapπ_0is the identity,πreadsφ⁻¹ ∘ Φin a blow-up chart, and two blow-up charts over one adapted chart have inverses agreeing off the hyperplane, hence everywhere by density.
These results enter the uniqueness of the blowing-up (Hironaka.Manifold.BlowUp.Unique) and
the transforms of ideal sheaves under it.
Blow-up charts for c = 1 #
For c = 1 a blow-up chart has the target of the adapted chart.
For c = 1, φ ∘ π = Φ on the source of a blow-up chart.
For c = 1, π = φ⁻¹ ∘ Φ on the source of a blow-up chart.
The exceptional divisor #
In a blow-up chart of index i the exceptional divisor F = π⁻¹(Y) is the hyperplane
{u_i = 0}.
A blow-up chart of index i is adapted to the exceptional divisor, with the single block
coordinate u_i.
z_i ∘ π = u_i: the pullback of the scaling coordinate of the adapted chart is the scaling
coordinate of the blow-up chart.
z_k ∘ π = u_i u_k for k ≠ i: the pullback of a ratio coordinate.
The exceptional divisor is a closed submanifold of codimension one (the exceptional divisor of a smooth blow-up is smooth, [Kol07, Notation 19]).
The pullback π^* I_Y · 𝒪_{M'} of the ideal sheaf of the centre is locally principal: in a
blow-up chart of index i its stalk is generated by the germ of the coordinate u_i.
The pullback of the ideal sheaf of Y is the ideal sheaf of the exceptional divisor.
The degenerate centres #
For c = 1 the blow-down restricted to a blow-up chart, as a partial diffeomorphism onto the
source of the adapted chart (inverse Φ⁻¹ ∘ φ).

Instances For
For c = 1 two blow-up charts over one adapted chart have the same inverse: the inverses agree
off the hyperplane (there π is injective) and are continuous, and the hyperplane's complement is
dense.
For an empty centre the blowing-up is a diffeomorphism (the empty blow-up of [Kol07, Warning 20]).
For a centre of codimension one the blowing-up is a diffeomorphism (the trivial blow-up of [Kol07, Warning 20]).
